Tooth Extractions

Our dentists may want to see you for a tooth extraction if one or more of your teeth have been damaged by tooth decay, infection or trauma, or if they have erupted at an improper angle. This may be especially true if the problem tooth poses a hazard to the overall health of your smile.

Often, a tooth extraction is a simple process. After administering a local anesthetic, the doctor will use a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth in its socket before removing it with an a pair of forceps. After your extraction, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions to avoid further problems, including dry socket. After the extraction, a bubble of blood will form over at the bottom of the socket to protect the exposed bone and nerves so that the area can properly heal. If that bubble is ruptured or removed, you can experience severe pain and may need to return to our office for further treatment. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed, and if you are prescribed an antibiotic, you should take it as directed and finish the entire prescription.
